Making Waves in College Health 4 Pre-Meeting Workshops Offered!
Beyond the Weight Police: Working Effectively with Eating Disordered Students in the Medical Setting
Margaret Higham, MD; Jodi Galin, PhD; Lisa Pearl, RD
Working with students with eating disorders is challenging, both because of the medical risks of the illness and the unusual dynamic of the visit. Unlike most students we see, ED students are at best ambivalent about getting better and often frankly resistant. This often times sets the stage for an antagonistic and judgmental dynamic between clini- cian and student. This workshop, led by a physician, a nutritionist and a therapist, will present key tasks in ED treat- ment and concrete guidance on developing a treatment plan. We will introduce motivational interviewing techniques as a way to change the dynamic between clinicians and students. We will not be discussing involuntary leaves; there will be time to discuss current cases in small groups.
Next Level Social Marketing: Applying the 4 Ps
Leah Berkenwald, MA; Timothy Edgar, PhD
Dive deeper into Social Marketing strategy by exploring the “4 Ps”: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. In this next-level workshop, you will learn how to practice applying these Social Marketing strategies to your own work.
Social marketing is an effective health communication strategy that applies commercial marketing principles to the promotion of socially desirable behavior change. Embraced by the CDC, it is a promising approach for health- related behavior change interventions. Unfortunately, most college wellness professionals do not have specific train- ing or sufficient experience in applying this strategy. Building upon the Social Marketing session from NECHA/ NYSCHA 2013, this session will focus on the "4 Ps" of social marketing strategy and give participants a chance to practice applying the strategy to their individual work.
Nurse Managers Roundtable
Katharine Bryda, ASN, BA, MS; Elaine Longley, BSN; Rebecca Minus, RN; Kathleen Savage, RN
Nurse Managers face many challenges in the day-to-day operations of a college health center. Keeping your staff motivated and clinically up to date while riding the budget merry-go-round are some common challenges. You are not alone! Building upon the success of last year’s Pre-Meeting workshop, come to share your ideas and approaches with peers from throughout New England. All are welcome.
Hot Topics in Disabilities
Jeanne Kincaid, Esq.; Deborah Cohen, Rochelle L’Italien, MS, RD, LD; Mark Peluso, MD, FAAFP
This Pre-Meeting workshop, still in the works, will be lead by nationally known disability lawyer and consultant, Jeanne Kincaid.
Jeanne has been a special education hearing officer and mediator for the State of New Hampshire, and has served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of New Hampshire's Graduate School of Education, Antioch University and Franklin Pierce Law Center (now the UNH School of Law).
Jeanne worked in an advisory capacity with AHEAD, a national organization whose membership consists of higher education staff that coordinate services for students with disabilities. She has held staff attorney positions with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, the Oregon
Department of Education, and served as a hearing officer for the Oregon Bureau of Labor and the New Hampshire Department of Education. She has been a contributing author to "Section 504, the ADA and the Schools" and "Disability Compliance for Higher Education." Jeanne represents institutions of higher education before the Office for Civil Rights and the U.S. Department of Justice. She has an active practice serving in a consulting capacity to the Office of General Counsel for numerous private universities throughout the country. An engaging presenter whose improvisational comedic background affords participants a unique approach to understanding complex legal issues, Jeanne has shared her expertise in dynamic presentations on hundreds of campuses from coast to coast.
