Health Promotion and Prevention Services (HPPS) invites applications for the Health Promotion Coordinator for Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drug (ATOD) Programs and Services position. We are seeking applicants who are interested in working as part of a team to empower students to achieve optimal well-being through health promotion, advocacy, and community involvement. The Health Promotion Coordinator for ATOD will be responsible for implementing evidence-based initiatives to reduce the consequences associated with the use and misuse of substances. Through their work with university partners, this individual will work to create offerings and initiatives that are directed at substance abuse prevention, risk reduction and support students in recovery. The ATOD Health Promotion Coordinator will facilitate the implementation of motivational interviewing programs and/or Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for students who have alcohol and other drug violations.
To be successful in the position, the ATOD Health Promotion Coordinator will need to be highly collaborative and creative, and knowledgeable of current ATOD and health trends. An ideal candidate will have depth of knowledge regarding the substance use/misuse/abuse behaviors of college students, understand and be able to implement best practices of public health, ATOD health promotion, and health communications; and have a proven track record of developing and evaluating programs and initiatives.
Primary Responsibilities:
Direct ATOD Programming
Assist in the strategic planning and implementation of programs and initiatives directed at ATOD prevention and risk reduction.
Manage educational sanctions from campus and university partners
Provide oversight and coordination of all campus alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention activities.
Develop and implement group specific training to students and staff and advise student groups on prevention strategies in planning events.
Coordinate screening and brief intervention services for students on campus.
Recommend, implement, and assess comprehensive strategies to address substance use/abuse and their intersections with other issues of identity and important health and behavior outcomes.
Incorporate multicultural diversity and social justice concepts and principles into all ATOD programs and services.
Collaborate with University Offices:
Collaborate and coordinate with campus, community and national partners to address high risk behavior and prevention initiatives on campus, including opportunities for research.
Work with campus constituents to develop University messages regarding student alcohol, tobacco and drug use utilizing the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to develop a comprehensive action plan.
Work collaboratively with programming entities on campus to increase outreach and awareness, and support prevention and risk reduction activities.
Serve as an expert resource to students, staff and university community members
Serve on University committees that are responsible for developing student policies and programs, particularly those focused on ATOD related issues. This may include participation in the university’s Tobacco and Smoke Free, Healthy Campus Initiative, etc.
In coordination with the University Counseling Center, facilitation of the Campus Recovery Support Group and their activities.
Support the Student Leadership Development:
Assist with the annual recruitment, training, and supervision of Healthy Campus Peer Agents, student interns and graduate assistants with the intention of developing them into leaders and growing the reach of the HPPS department.
Manage ATOD Communication Efforts:
Reimage current social norms campaign based on campus needs assessment.
Develop a strategic marketing plan for the production of programming, educational, and digital campaign materials (i.e. brochures, posters, flyers, PSA’s, PowerPoint presentations, etc.).
Conduct Regular Needs Assessment, Evaluation and Research:
Coordinate and conduct the Environmental Prevention Survey biannually and be involved with other related assessment/ program evaluation activities on campus and within the community as applicable.
Develop a methodology for identifying campus ATOD trends and use this data as part of evaluating programmatic success. This includes establishing timelines for assessment, defining measurable objectives, creating data collection instruments (qualitative and quantitative), synthesizing data into reports, etc.
Create documents and administrative reports as directed (i.e. Drug Free Schools Biennial Review).
Coordinate activities to secure external ATOD funding for projects and extended services, as directed, as opportunities arise.

Requirements:
Master’s degree in mental health, social work, student affairs, health education, public health, higher education or related field.
At least 2 years of experience in health education programming and outreach.
Demonstrated current knowledge of ATOD prevention research and best practices, preferably with respect to the developmental tasks unique to the college-age cohort and campus community setting.
Demonstrated leadership ability and ability to work independently.
Demonstrated effectiveness in collaborating across departments, agencies and institutional systems.
Flexibility and ability to manage complex roles and processes within a dynamic work environment.
Proven record of successful educational outreach and program delivery.
Excellent organizational, communication, collaboration, consensus-building and interpersonal skills.
Strong work ethic, team oriented and “user-friendly” to all constituents.
Multi-cultural competence, with knowledge and skills to work with diverse populations and develop culturally sensitive programming.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience within higher education.
Advanced skill and experience in assessment and program evaluation.
Experience addressing public health issues in order to impact the culture of a community.
Experience with motivational interviewing programs (i.e. SBIRT Screening).
Experience in supervising graduate assistants, interns and/or peer educators.
