General Summary of Position:
The Staff Nurse is responsible for providing professional, developmentally appropriate, culturally competent nursing care to college students, clinical support to the Nurse Practitioner staff, as well as support of direct services of Health Services, including management of vaccine administration program and TB surveillance program.
Specific responsibilities include:
Provides clinical support to Nurse Practitioners as directed including:
Preparation of laboratory specimens for laboratory processing
Review of laboratory results for Nurse Practitioners and subsequent alerts regarding abnormal test results. May notify patients of normal results as directed by Nurse Practitioners.
Review prescription refill requests. Authorize refills as appropriate per protocols. Forward requests requiring further review to the appropriate Nurse Practitioner.
Provide direct nursing care to students
Independently conduct nursing assessments of sick or injured students and formulates appropriate plan of care
Provide individual health counseling
Perform dressing changes, suture removal, nebulizer treatments, phlebotomy, wound care, first aid, vital signs, and other treatments and procedures, as needed, under the direction of a nurse practitioner or physician
Administer injections as ordered
Administer vaccines as necessary
Collect lab specimens and performs CLIA waived laboratory tests as directed
Accurately document each encounter in medical record
Triage patients with urgent concerns in person or via telephone
Assess concern by accurately gathering subjective/objective data and medical histories
Provide appropriate nursing advice or treatment and plan of care per scope of practice including clarification of self-care directions
Refer patients to appropriate health care provider as needed, on-site or off -campus
Document each encounter accurately in medical record
Consult with nurse practitioners as needed
Informs Assistant Director or Director of potential public health issues on campus and report issue to appropriate authorities.
Provides oversight and coordination of LTBI assessment process
Maintain up-to-date LTBI Risk Assessment and Symptom Review forms
Administer and interpret Tuberculosis skin tests as necessary with required documentation, referral, reporting and follow up plan of care
Maintain adequate supply of Tuberculin PPD
Maintain and order medical supplies
Train work study students in stocking supplies in Health Services and other support services ensuring students are trained in Blood Borne Pathogen protocols.
Maintain order and cleanliness of lab, inventory of lab supplies, lab equipment, and sterilization of instruments
Maintain and order vaccine supply and implement vaccine storage requirements per Massachusetts Department of Public Health protocols
Generates Medicat reports as required and/or requested
Coordinate scheduling and administration of annual influenza clinics
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing, with a baccalaureate degree in nursing
Current R.N. licensure with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing
Current BCLS certification
Minimum of 3-5 years of professional nursing experience, in an acute care or urgent care setting
Strong nursing assessment skills
Proven ability to manage a multiple patient case load to maintain daily patient flow
Knowledge of college immunization requirements
Experience effectively working with a culturally and ethnically diverse population
Demonstrated ability to triage
Ability to prioritize multiple patient case load
Proficient phlebotomy skills
Knowledge of risk management, medical ethics, and medical-legal liability
Knowledge of HIPAA/FERPA laws
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Basic computer literacy
Experience working in college health and knowledge of the health needs of the traditional and non-traditional student preferred
