Reporting to the Director of Health Education, the Alcohol and Other Drug Specialist coordinates and implements wellness and prevention initiatives and strategies to reduce the negative consequences associated with heavy episodic drinking and substance misuse.
The position works collaboratively with Student Affairs colleagues, faculty, students, families and community partners to address risk factors and promote protective factors associated with student health and safety.
Researching, implementing, and evaluating theory and evidence-based health promotion strategies, policies, programs, and services designed to educate the student population about student substance abuse prevention.
Creating, refining and executing brief motivational interventions for students involved in drug, alcohol and high-risk alcohol behaviors/incidents.
Providing substance use assessment and making recommendations for behavior change treatment and support including making referrals to other campus and community partners.
Training professional staff, and supervising undergraduate interns/peer educators.
Co-chairing the Alcohol and Other Drug Committee.
Networking with local and regional schools, institutions of higher education, and treatment centers.
Assisting with development and documentation of policies, procedures, and publications regarding AOD prevention, health and wellness education.
Serving as a resource and consultant to the Wesleyan community for substance abuse-related problems, including consulting and collaborating with various university departments.
Keeping current on professional knowledge in collegiate and community health promotion.
Exercising discretion regarding highly confidential student and personnel matters.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Health Education, Social Work, or a related field and a minimum of one-year professional experience in alcohol and drug prevention or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work with the strategic prevention framework and current AOD issues.
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement AOD education and prevention programs.
Experience with social norms and marketing campaigns.
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Demonstrated time management, organizational, supervisory, flexibility and creativity skills.
Demonstrated effective communication skills and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated public speaking and presentation skills.
Demonstrated competence in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Prezi.
Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and work collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.
Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) and/or Licensed Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor (LADC) with an advanced degree in Health Education, Public Health, Social Work, Psychology or related field.
Two years of demonstrated professional experience with college-aged clients working in higher education and AOD prevention.
Experience in developing and facilitating large group training events and prevention workshops/presentations, focus groups, motivational interviewing for substance abuse prevention, and experience as a BASICS provider.
Demonstrated ability working with data collection, analysis, and reporting.
